Custom Size Cooling Tower Fill: What Eng
Replacing cooling tower fill sounds simple until the original tower drawings, fill model number, or supplier information can no longer be found.
This is common with older cooling towers. The equipment may have been operating for many years, while the original technical documents are incomplete. At that point, ordering a new Cooling Tower Fill based only on the old product name can create unnecessary installation problems.
The first question is not the fill width. It is the tower configuration.
For a crossflow cooling tower, air normally moves horizontally through the fill while water flows downward. The replacement media therefore needs to match the way the tower was designed to move air and water.
This is why a fill product that looks similar in a catalog is not automatically a suitable replacement.
When drawings are unavailable, the existing installation becomes an important source of information. Measure the usable fill width, sheet or module length, fill depth, and available installation space.
For example, a tower requiring a relatively wide crossflow fill section may use a product such as 1470mm Width Cooling Tower Fill or 1830mm Width Cooling Tower Fill, depending on the original tower arrangement.
However, the nominal width alone does not confirm compatibility. The complete fill arrangement should be checked before production.
Two cooling towers can use similar-looking film fill while using different installation methods. Some systems rely on specific supports, hanging arrangements, or module configurations.
Therefore, take photographs of the existing fill installation and support structure whenever possible. This can help confirm how the replacement sections need to be manufactured and installed.
The structure of the old fill is another useful reference. Look at the sheet pattern, corrugation, spacing, and overall configuration rather than judging the product only by appearance.
If the original fill cannot be identified, providing a physical sample or detailed photographs can be much more useful than simply giving the cooling tower model number.
With this information, the supplier can determine whether a standard product is appropriate or whether the fill should be customized.
The biggest mistake during replacement is treating cooling tower fill as a simple plastic component that can be ordered by width alone.
A correct replacement should fit the tower physically while also maintaining the intended water and airflow conditions. If the original information is incomplete, measurements, photographs, samples, and installation details can provide enough information to make a much safer purchasing decision.
For older cooling towers, taking a little more time before ordering the replacement fill can prevent cutting, modification, installation delays, and unexpected performance problems later.
